The UK based MCPHILLIPS FOUNDATION maintains sole focus on the children and neighbourhood surrounding three schools located in Sierra Leone. Shipments leave London containing clothing, footwear, school bags, books and educational equipment; whilst not forgetting those important fun things including games, toys, and of course, sweet confectionary items, all specifically destined for three Rural Education Schools just outside Freetown, the names of which we choose not to disclose.
Says Kevin McPhillips “it has to be emphasised that anything we do is never to be considered charity since such a patronising term will never be applicable to our fine young friends in these schools. They are proud young people who simply miss out on some of the things children in other parts of the world take for granted. They are not recipients of “charity” - they are an important part of Sierra Leone’s future and they’ll make it just fine. In the meantime, our work is simply by way of a little help - no different to helping our own children at home from time to time - it’s no big dramatic deal - simple as that”
This year has already seen a remarkable tonnage of items for the children’s personal use flown to Sierra Leone by the Foundation: and now the schools they attend are also receiving large amounts of valuable educational equipment including thousands of exercise books, note pads, pens, pencils, computer related materials and many other items for use in the classroom
Adds McPhillips “so now we’ve arrived at the perfect mix; on the one hand, clothing, toys, children’s books and such things for the children themselves, whilst on the other hand, the schools they attend are receiving essential materials specifically relating to their actual education”
The past few years have seen the efforts of the Foundation flourish with constant work and effort of Kevin McPhillips Travel staff in the United Kingdom including Jan Beacroft and Peta Standley, both well known to so many throughout the Sierra Leone community in Britain - and celebrated interior designer Jill Cappella, a woman with a passion for the Foundation’s work
Says Beacroft, “From what was originally a one off shipment a few years ago is today an operation of considerable size and now we are able to make a weekly shipment of items, not only for the children themselves, but as importantly for the schools they attend”
Adds Cappella “An important ingredient of the Foundation’s success is that of coordination on the ground by dedicated local colleagues providing swift and efficient transit to the designated delivery points in Freetown. Here in England, we are eternally grateful for the kindness and love shown by those many children, parents and teachers at a number of collaborating schools. Micklefield School in Reigate is one such UK location where the dedication of headmistress Mrs. Rose and parents including Amanda Needham is so much appreciated”
To date, having shipped in excess of 100 tons, the MCPHILLIPS
FOUNDATION is funded and operated through the Sierra Leone
