| Mano River Bridge reopens |
Thursday 07 June 2007 saw the reopening of the Mano
River Bridge between Sierra Leone and Liberia. The bridge
represents a vital trade link between the two countries, reactivating
the spirit of the Mano River Union.
Following the original tri part agreement between Sierra Leone, Liberia
and Guinea to form the commercial entity to be known as the Mano
River Union way back in 1973, the bridge became an integral
part of the whole idea in 1976. However, further plans to establish a
highway between Freetown and Monrovia fell foul of subsequent hostilities
shared by both countries.
Early 2007 saw the introduction of Cote D’Ivoire as fourth partner
to the accord, though whilst all four strive to address their own important
domestic agendas, significant forward strides in such commercial union
is yet to be seen. However, this landmark date of the bridge’s reopening
is seen as a true representation of peace having returned to the region
from which it is hoped that appropriate progress in development of trade
may be achieved; facilitating the movement of goods, vehicles and people,
encouraging a fair distribution of the benefits of such economic cooperation.
